Dont sue me, I have permission from Rogue to post this.
Common Name: Red Wolf (Sometimes known as Mexican Wolf) Latin Name: Canis Rufus Territories: North Carolina Size: 4.5-5.5 feet (1.40m-1.65m) including tail. Shoulder Height: 15-16 inches (38-40cm) Weight: 40-80 pounds (18-36 kg) Colouration: Red or orange with lots of silver or grey mixed in. Status: Highly endangered.
Characteristics Smaller than the grey wolf but with larger ears and legs.
They like to live in marshy areas.
They are mostly nocturnal, but are more diurnal in the winter.
Hunting Red Wolves tend to prey on small animals such as raccoons and rabbits, because they are smaller than other wolves it is difficult for them to catch large prey unless they are helped by other wolves. They have been known to eat insects and berries. They prefer white-tailed deer and and raccoon. They usually hunt alone or sometimes in family groups.
Reproduction Red Wolves mate for life. They breed yearly and the breeding season is in January. The gestation period is about 63 days and they usually have about 2-8 pups, usually near the lower number.
Conservation The Red Wolf is highly endangered. This is mainly due to loss of territory and inter-breeding with Coyotes.
There are special areas reserved for them, St. Vincent Island in Florida has a population of Red Wolves which were introduced to the island in an attempt to stop them dying out. A similar program was done on Cape St. George Island more recently.
I am honored to write this topic to help all you peeps.
