Sanguinaireä
Snow crunched under white paws, eyes the color of dried blood peered through the underbrush. Carefully the large white figure extended its limbs, long snout and leathery nose sniffing at the glacial winds until there he found it. There, only 12 feet from him the strong musky scent of another, it had been sometime since another of their kind had dared to come near the home of the Sanguinaire. Known for their speed, strength, and ruthlessness in the kill, the Sanguinaire were a banished kind for their practices. But it was not the banishment that kept these ruthless killers away from other packs, it had been the solitude and the bounty of food that kept there interest in a way nothing ever had. A grin passed over the white creatures face; maroon eyes became dark as the creature crouched to the ground, legs moving low but quickly. The sun glinted off the white coat, catching the silver creature in the clearing’s eye, swiveling around just in time to get tackled from the white one.
Paws planted on the silver creature’s chest, teeth bared in a snarl, tail high, now that they were in the sun you could tell that both of the creatures were wolves. The white one was taller and much slimmer; the silver normal sized and stocky, practically bulging with muscle with small green eye’s glaring at its opponent, in turn the maroon eyes became slits, glaring down at its opponent.
“What do you want here?” The white wolf snarled, his voice was obviously male and his posture spoke dominance as he hovered over his prey.
“If it concerned you then I would be honored to say so, but lucky for the both of us it doesn’t!” The silver wolf snarled back, placing his hind paws on the whites belly and pushed with all his might, rolling promptly to his four paws as soon as the white was off him. “Where is your alpha, I have words for him from the Council of 9!”
“Ha, like the council would speak with us! They are the ones that banished us, though I must say these mountains suit us well.” The white wolf added with a smile, eyes slited with a dangerous look to them, which only caused the silver wolf to snarl at him and spring forward. But as soon as he was in midair another shape appeared at his side, knocking him to the ground with a snarl, the silver male soon found himself on the ground again staring at a dark brown wolf. Though he was smaller than the white wolf, he was still taller than the silver and almost just as muscled.
“Well then Lucky, what a surprise, I’m guessing that you lost…” The white wolfs maroon eyes shifted to his new companion, Lucky, and grinned, the look of danger still in his eyes and shining like a beacon.
“Now now Razor, don’t be a sore loser, just because you lost doesn’t mean I did, maybe I wanted patrol.” Lucky turned his stormy gray eyes on the white wolf, Razor, and gave a grin which only produced a low growl that rumbled to earth beneath the silver. As he stood there was a killing look in his green eyes that quickly faded as he straightened himself to try and reach these wolves height.
“I have no time for this, I must speak to your alpha, it is of grave importance!” The silver male snarled yet again, and Razor, the white wolf, began to wonder if that’s all he could do was act macho and snarl all the time. Giving a chuckle he sat on the ground, white coat giving off a ghostly glow in the now fading light, the tall tree’s began blotting out the sun, forcing the winds to blow around there thick trunks and stirring the new snow on the ground to a small flurry.
“And what does a wolf like you, or even the council for that matter, want with us?!? They made their decision to throw out the Sanguinaire, and don’t tell me there having second thoughts.” Lucky grinned to the silver wolf, tail high but body low, muscles taut with contained energy, a hungry look in his eyes as he observed his ‘prey’.
“Enough Lucky, watch him… Do not move sir, or I shall be forced to attack.” Razor stood back up, his own tail low and head down, the wind stirring his thick fur and sending the snow everywhere around him. Soon he was out of sight, Lucky just smirked and put his ears up, Razor did always have a way with his howls, and sure enough he produced one that seemed to shake the tree’s and earth. The coldness of it went deep into the silvers bones and caused him to shiver, the tree’s responded to the sound with a groan, as if it hurt them to hear such a call. Another howl replied, almost with the same effect but not quite as chilling, but this howl held power, commanding and fearsome, the call of an alpha that was strong enough to rule the savages of the Sanguinaire. Razor soon came back, his eyes watching the ground, feeling the wind on his face, digging his claws into the earth with each step into the shadows where he stuck out like a weed in a flower patch.
“What is this, do I smell a lady? I think I do, don’t tell me you are traveling with a companion my silver friend.” Lucky smirked, his hungry eyes turning to some bush’s that the silver male had been looking at only moments ago.
“You dare and I will rip your heart out of your chest and strangle you with your own intestines.” The silver growled, eyes slitted now as he watched Lucky creep forward, there was as sudden snarl.
“Lucky! Take one more step and I will take excessive measures in your punishment.” A gold wolf stepped into the clearing, eyes of all colors appeared in the shadows, looking down from higher spots, a black wolf crept beside Razor, eyes a strange red that almost looked like they were glowing.
“Yes Titan.” Lucky backed away into the shadows and retreated with his tail between his legs beside Razor and the strange red eyes wolf. The silver looked to the gold wolf, his very presence demanded the eyes of all that were near him, standing tall, tail and ears erect and alert. This had to be the alpha.
“Sir, I come with news from the council.” The silver gave a bow then looked to the wolf that came trotting up to the alphas side, slim and gorges, her fur was a dark rusty brown with spots like a leopards. Rubbing her head against the alphas shoulder before sitting beside the large golden creature, a content look in her eyes as she gazed at him. Titan growled, making the silver turn his dark green eyes back to him, there was a chuckle from the wolves that surrounded them.
“I suggest you keep your eyes on me and not my possessions, Razor, you called me now I insist you will help this wolf understand who he is talking to.” Titan grinned maliciously and looked to the white wolf, with his head bent Razor stepped out, ears flicked forward to catch the hushed whispering of the crowd.
“All hail Titan, leader of the Sanguinaire, savior of the strong and punisher of the weak. New cumber I insist you state your name and purpose or you shall find death at your neck.” Razor whispered his last sentence to the silver before backing away into the shadows once more, head still hung.
“I come bearing news of Jasper, Protector of the Innocent, and Zadiren, his only child and daughter.” The silver male bowed again, eyes locked to the floor yet head high, defiance strong in his posture.
“State your name, or be killed where you stand.” Titan growled, lowering himself onto his haunches with a satisfied grin, the silver male snuck a look up to the alphas face, stone cold and hard, his eyes a dark bluish black that seemed to suck him in.
“I am Hero, I come with bad news… Jasper, was attacked, we do not know by whom but we do know that-“
“I do not care of what has happened to the one that betrayed me, kill him.” Titan stood and began to walk away, wolves growled and yipped with excitement, drawing in closer to the now frightened silver, a white form streaked by Hero and a sudden whimper made him turn in freight. Laying on the ground was a gray wolf, its wind pipe ripped from its throat and blood covering the ground, again the white form whizzed by, 2 more yelps and Hero swiveled again to see more wolves lying on the ground, blood pooling around there open necks.
“Razor!” Titan’s voice boomed around the clearing, the white blur stilled and a bloody Razor stood among the bodies, an empty look on his face. “Look what you have done, what do you gain from this mindless killing of your own pack mates!?!?”
“Sir, if you would please hear this wolf out I fear he may have important information for us and the pack.” Razor’s legs shook, his eyes showing no hint of fear but instead they held a fierce look of hate that seemed to burn through Hero’s skull and into Titan.
With a snort Titan looked to the dead bodies of his pack, then to the rest who seemed to cower as power flowed from Razor. “Alright Razor Blade, I will hear him out but if you are wrong then I will make you kill him then I will banish you from this land, and where would you be then.” Titan gave a smirk, though Razor was of the best hunter and guard Titan had a strong hate for him, nobody knew why they just let it be and never said a word about it.
“S-sir… As I said before, Jasper was attacked, he barely made it alive, Zadiren… Was also attacked, we got to her in time… We hardly made it out alive, but we made it none the less… Now I come before you, seeking help just as Jasper instructed me too.” Hero looked to the wolves surrounding him, their hungry eyes flicked from there alpha, Hero, and finally Razor, then started all over again, just waiting for a sign of any sorts. “Please, I beg of you to help us… I speak of nothing but the truth…”
Razor had heard of the strongest wolves giving into the pressure of his pack, hell he had even seen it once or twice, but looking at Hero made him feel sickness deep in his belly, the wolf was shaking from nose to tail tip, it was as if he was shivering from the cold. With courage he stepped up beside the quaking creature, standing at his full height he could see all the faces of his brethren looking at him, some in awe at standing up to Titan, others in disgust. Finally he found the face he had been looking for, there in the shadows was his best friend, his pack mate for life, the one wolf he knew he could turn to in any time of need, and yet he stood shaking his head in disbelief. The bright red eyes looked him in the eye, then turned away and looked to Lucky, speaking in a low whisper about god only knows what, this pack was about as bad with gossip as Victorian age English women.
“Very well… Bring Zadiren to me in no more than 2 moons, or you shall find yourself in a very big problem.” With that said Titan turned, and walked back into the shadows, slowly the eyes of the rest of the pack receded, the last to stay was the one with red eyes, it watched on as if all this was a dream, a dream he could wake up from. But no, there stood Razor, tall and proud of what he had just done, it was like he had just won a fierce battle, bloody, tired, and yet still able to stand for himself. With another shake of his head, the black wolf known as Kuro walked into the shadows, blending with them effortlessly, and without a second glance he left his best friend standing alone.
“You got what you want… Now I suggest you do as Titan wants…” Razor turned away, his head sinking, eyes fixated on the ground as if something there captured his interest.
“Come with me… There is nothing else for you here, they all left you for a reason.” Hero looked to the white wolf, Razor had saved his life and now the debt must be paid back in full, and with this white warrior by his side Hero could travel without worry.
“I cannot, I must return to my pack and accept my punishment… I spoke out when I wasn’t supposed to; Titan is not a forgiving being… And it would only be taunting him if I were to leave, I know his mind, he thinks I will run and that will give him a chance to kill me… The Sanguinaire may be killers to others, but when it comes to killing each other we find it the most enjoyable… A trained killer against another…” The rest of Razor’s sentence came out as a whisper, lost to the wind that blew more snow up into the air, the faint smell of a female coming from Hero. “Where is your companion?” Razor looked back to the silver wolf with a slightly confused look, ears cocked forward and head tilted to the right.
“I left her near the base of the mountain… I feared her safety and told her to stay down near the forest… Why do you ask?” Hero backed up a little; his macho man act coming back now, for his eyes became mere slits and glared at Razor with curiosity.
“It is not safe, no place is safe among the Sanguinaire.” Razor moved with the speed and grace of his pack, Hero turned towards the fading scent and, with the same confused look on his face, followed him.
Originally it would take at least half a day to travel down the mountain for any normal wolf that is willing to move without food, water, or sleep. But it very well could take maybe a day or 2 on the hike back up, that was the thing that worried Razor as he raced down the mountain, he had saved a wolf’s life but at what cost, Titan had agreed but would they make it in time? Looking back Razor could see the silver shape of Hero trailing behind, but in the shadows behind him… Could it be, no… He wouldn’t… Shaking his head softly he turned back to the task at hand and started back down the mountain, ears forwards and nose high, picking scents off the wind; caribou, rabbit, falcon, wolf, and bear. A low growl came from Razor’s throat, rumbling his chest, it had been awhile since the bear had bothered his pack but who knew what they would do to a lone wolfess.
A warning was barked, weakly yet it was a warning. Razor stopped, the snow coming up to mid-leg on him, a panting Hero was soon standing beside him, the snow rising up to nearly his chest, the few tree’s surrounding the base of the mountain groaned as the wind picked up.
“My lady, it is I… We must take our leave if you are well enough.” Hero panted in between his words, head low and coral pink tongue lolling out from his parted jaws. “Please my lady, we must move now.”
Razor stood tall, a sentry of the mountain, a Sanguinaire, everything that wolves of the outside had been told to avoid, and yet these 2 wolves come seeking help from the very things they had banished away. There was a light chuckle from Razor, then a look of surprise as a sharp smell of a rotting carcass wafted over the gathered wolves, a new shape was formed from the flurry of snow, taller than Razor, thicker than Hero, scars covering his body, left eye useless under a large pink x, and half of the creatures right ear was missing.
“Well what do we have here? I didn’t expect to find more play things…” The large wolf approached the 2 males, his coat was the darkest black tinged with blue while the remaining eye was as red as holly berries, while his left was a milky white.
“Census… We mean no trouble, let us leave in peace and no harm will befall you.” Razor strutted towards the large black wolf, tail high and ears forward, trying to win dominance over this massive creature of a wolf.
“Ha, ha, ha… Oh Razor, I never did expect to see you again… Amelia would kill me if I were to rip you apart. She is so fond of you, you know…” Census’s voice was like liquid poison, slipping into the ears of those around him and getting into their blood, making it boil. Hero could do nothing but look at the massive beast in front of him, it was like looking at a bear, and yet you could tell and yet you could tell this creature was of wolven bred.
“What do you w-want…?” Hero finally found his voice but it wavered as he spoke out, the large wolf known as Census turned to him with a smile, pupil’s tiny specks in his eyes, a blood thirsty look making his face look insane. With a whimper Hero backed up, something about this wolf scared him beyond normal measures.
“Your battle is with me Census! Pay no attention to those I travel with or I shall alert Titan and Amelia of what you have done here…” Razor snarled out his words, standing tall but with a fierce look in his eyes, Census moved like lighting, running at full speed with his head down, at his white opponent. Razor, who seemed to disappear with such speed, was gone and running up the hill, Hero couldn’t believe that creatures of this size could move so fast.
As soon as they were well into the tree’s Hero turned and started the search for his mistress, hopefully the big brute hadn’t found her for only god would know what he would have done with such a prize. His heart beating fast, Hero checked behind every bush and tree in a 30 foot radius where he had left his lady, but with her nowhere to be found he began fearing the worst, without a second thought he howled his news to Razor, tears pooling at his forest green eyes.
Halted in place, Razor listened to Hero’s howl with open ears, already he was panting after his trek up the mountain. Turning back to look behind him for Census he realized that the brute wasn’t there, a growl pierced the silence as Razor looked up to the night sky, stars were twinkling above him, almost mocking him and his stupidity, another growl as he turned back around, he could save his own skin and return to Titan with a lie, or he could actually kill Hero and return, then there would be no lie. Or… He could run, run from a place he had called home since his puppy days, where his sister now waited for his return, where his friends did the same. Where his biggest enemy awaited his defeat. Snarling he turned and raced back down the hill, Razor would not fail, it wasn’t in his nature to do so.
About half way down a black figure ran towards him, without thinking Razor turned and rammed into the creature, lips pulled back into a full snarl, fangs inches from his opponent.
“Razor, halt! It is me, Kuro!” Red eyes looked up into the white face, scared and helpless, never had a look befallen any of the Sanguinaire, but here was Razor’s best friend, looking up at him like he was about to die. Seeing his reflection in Kuro’s wide eyes Razor knew why, with pupils dilated, fangs dripping with saliva, and hackles raised he perched above him like an angel of death.
“Dear god what have I done…” Razor backed away, his own eyes blank with some hidden emotion, his mouth hanging open and tail between his legs, Razor had almost killed his best friend. “How many times must this happen in one day!” His features became pained and angry, snarling he turned to a tree and with all his might Razor swiped at the trunk, leaving large wounds in its bark. “I saw your brother… He’s out and about again, I’m guessing the council allowed him to live… I was a little surprised to see him so soon.” Razor smirked, looking only at the tree, but a sharpness was in his voice, inflicting its wounds on Kuro.
“What is it about him that makes you so angry…? He’s no different than I am Razor…” Kuro walked towards his friend who growled a warning, backing away again the black wolf shook his head, bright eyes showing signs of defeat. “You have changed so much over these past few minutes, Razor Blade… How can I ever call you my friend again when you reject both me and my family…?” Turning sharply to hide his angry eyes Kuro ran into the shadows, a pain hit Razor deeply, never had he rejected someone so, but now he feared his friend’s safety.
“I will come back for you Kuro, and by then everything will be clear, just have patience…” Razor whispered to the wind, hoping it would carry his words to the soul he just injured, with that said the white wolf turned from his home and raced back down the mountain once more, knowing full well what would happen next.
“They have taken her; there are signs of a struggle over here!” Hero was barking like a mad man when Razor returned, the day was almost spent and they still had hardly a trace to this Zadiren.
“Patience, fellow… We must cool ours heads before moving on ahead, we cannot expect them to take us lightly when we are on their territory.” Maroon eyes moved to stare at the pacing silver wolf, sighing Razor sat on his haunches. “Come now fellow, do not worry, we shall find your lady and return to the mountain in time… Sanguinaire’s never go back on their word.”
“It is not your pack I fear! I fear the safety of my charge; I could care less what your pack had to say about all this!” Hero was practically shouting his lungs out as he paced relentlessly around in the snow.
“By the gods in heaven I will track them down and bring your fair lady back, just calm down and sit.” Razor was on his feet now, looking to Hero as spittle dripped from the creatures chin and onto the snow. Finally the silver wolf sat, dark green eyes staring down at the white trampled snow.
“There, now stay here and I shall be back before morning…” Razor looked out into the vast openness of the plains, covered in snow they looked bleak, and unforgiving to any traveler that would dare take them on in their current state. Razor took a deep breath, the frozen air pinched at his lungs, and pierced his throat; the Wastelands were dangerous to any wolf, no matter the breed, rank or pack. Anyone or anything would kill you unless you belonged to Amelia; unfortunately Razor knew he could grantee himself safe passage, but Hero was another story. “Stay here, if you follow me there is a chance you may be killed, actually there really is no chance that you will live… They will kill you, just have faith in me and be ready to run when I come back.” Another breath and then the white wolf plunged himself into the cold Wastelands, and into insanity…
To Be Continued…
Snow crunched under white paws, eyes the color of dried blood peered through the underbrush.
